I was born and raised in Welland. A graduate of the old Welland High, I have seen this city change over the years. I know that many people are starting home business ventures and supplementing their income with self-employment. I love my city and enjoy helping people improve their lives.
I spent 11 plus years as a Math and Business teacher in the public schools and in private high schools in Ontario. I also taught high school Math and Business internationally for 7 years in Venezuela. Teaching and practicing accounting, economics and bookkeeping has been my joy for over 30 years.
I am a Bible believing Christian and stand firm on the Truth with full authenticity and integrity. I am also a "numbers person" (I know that makes me a bit odd) but I can see errors, patterns and trends easily. I pay attention to details and am orderly and methodical in my work. I have strong administrative skills and when mixed with my teaching skills, you will find in me a patient leader who encourages and equips people to move forward towards their full potential.
I began to work out of my home but have since moved to the Seaway Mall to better serve my clientele.
My administrative gifts and numerical acuity have been used to help churches, denominations and not-for-profit organizations over the years. My first experience with charity bookkeeping was in my own church as the bookkeeper at the age of 19. I am currently in this role again and sitting as the Treasurer on our administrative church board.
I was a missionary in Venezuela for 7 years and was the National Treasurer, transferring financial support to workers from the USA and Canada and managing mission assets.
I have had experience as a Board Treasurer and Bookkeeper for the SGF of Canada (a church denomination) and Rosalind Blauer Centre for Child Care at Brock University (a not-for-profit organization). I was the former Financial Officer and most recently CEO of Open Arms Mission of Welland Inc. (a charity).
These experiences have enabled me to be quite prolific in receipting, fund accounting, T3010, and other ‘specific to not-for-profits’ tasks and forms.
Prior to starting my own small business, I did bookkeeping work for a small businessman in Wainfleet and studied at Brock University in the Chartered Accountant Co-op program. These co-ops gave me experience in bookkeeping, audits and taxation.
I started my own business, Authentic Bookkeeping, and worked for a sub-contractor, a couple home improvement small businesses, and a condo management company. I have been employed in various kinds of work giving eclectic experiences in various fields.
Wanting to expand my online presence and expand services to include personal tax, I was prompted to make an operational name change for my registered business to MK Bookkeeping and Taxes.
Having tax experience in my co-op training, I continued to help friends and family complete their personal tax returns. Being a life-long learner, I signed up for the introductory tax course through H&R Block. I began filing for them for the 2010 tax season and refined my skills being exposed to many types of returns.
I began teaching for H&R Block as I continued with advanced studies myself, becoming a senior tax pro in 5 years.
I continued to help people informally with their tax returns but over the last 3 tax seasons I have been operating through my home business to serve clients with businesses, income properties, and general tax returns. It is important to me that all credits that apply are used and that everything that needs to be reported is done so honestly.
I have had the opportunity to work with Melissa over the last year, and she has been a great resource and professional for our firm and clients. Melissa assists in preparing our client's monthly bookkeeping, including a variety of activities and compliance. She has been both professional and courteous to our clients, and always responsive when they are in need or have questions. Melissa has been helping us for quite a few years now with our family's complicated taxes. From our small business accumulating some taxes in arrears, to various employment stubs, a "shoe box" of receipts, and a mishmash of documents - Melissa has shown us the way through and made it all work seamlessly.
